SUBMIT

We accept submissions for art and writers for our monthly release issues! Want to have your work in VOTOW? So do we! Our full policy is available here, here are some commonly asked questions.

1. How long should my submission be?

We generally advise short story or fiction submissions be between 1000 - 7500 words. For submissions such as poetry, or essays, we allow a level of flexibility.

2. Do you edit the works?

We will do basic edits for format, spelling and grammar within reasonable limits. We do not do any edits past that, and will request the author makes the adjustments themselves if required as to remain true to their intended concept. Feedback within limits is provided, but we do not wish to make substantial changes to an authors work nor make substantial contributions to their writing or narrative.

3. Do contributors get paid for their work?

If published within a monthly release, all contributors for that month are given a percentage cut of the total profits from that months issue, divided between the number of contributors. This allows contributors to get fair compensation for their work that scales with our viewership, authors are also paid for any re-printing of their work in our yearly compilations, or any use going forward.

Until it is published, or at least until we confirm we are interested in doing so, we do not consider any submitted work to be exclusive.

4. Who holds rights to the work?

We dont want to limit an author or artist, or their work, but we also want to make sure the works hold a special place in our catalog on release. We ask for exclusive rights for 2 months post release of the issue, and rights to reprint in the future, but after that two month cut off: We hold no exclusivity to your works at all, you can do with them as you wish. We view this as an exclusivity lease. We do not at any point hold claim to the works or subsequent adaptions or creations from that work unless a separate agreement is requested, or made.

5. Can I submit as many as I want?

We ask writers to limit themselves to 3 per month at the most, and each author may only be published once per month. Artists we ask to limit themselves to 5 images per month. We do not limit individuals from submitting every month should they wish to do so. Authors are also voted on each month by our subscribers to return to write more should they wish, with each months favourite receiving the invite.

6. Does it have to be new work?

We do not accept works that have been published elsewhere or that are available online in other locations. This is to maintain a level of exclusivity and uniqueness, and to prevent us stepping on the toes of other platforms or publishers. Should an author wish to publish their works online after the 2 month exclusivity cut off, they are free to do so to whatever degree they wish, we do not consider it within our purview to influence.

7. How do I know if my writing or art fits?

We allow a broad selection of works, including but not limited to: Fantasy, science fiction, weird fiction, horror, occult, political, mystery and more. Our main concern is about the exploration of ideas, of writing, of fiction. We want to encourage our contributors, and readers, to explore the world of fiction.

Some issues, be that seasonal or event based, may have a specific theme. We offer a mailing list for all contributors that can be signed up to here that can help give you notice in advance should you wish to, though we do not consider this compulsory. Some stories may be published at a later date than their submission month should they fit a theme, or be held to be presented with other similar works, should this happen, the contributing creators will be consulted ahead of time so they are aware of the dates of publication.
